sometimes the wind
27" x 25" / acrylic on canvas / $550
I needed to still my heart, body and soul so that I may begin to hear beyond the whisper of the dreams to their meaning. I began spending time in silence and practicing the stilling of my being and I began to experience increased moments of awe and reverence for the world in which I lived. In juxtaposition to these beautiful moments, I also experienced moments of deep loneliness and sadness.
I was becoming aware of the beauty and seemingly intangible force that moved around and through my life. Driving home one day from a distant place, I came to an area where a large rock cliff rose from the ground and sharply reached for the sky. As I passed by the side of this magnificent rock, the wind suddenly danced across the top of this ledge. The wind’s merger with the ledge resulted in a large and delicate flight of hundreds of dried and multi-colored leaves. These leaves left the solidity of the ground and took flight moving in a spiraling formation that sent a colorful and rhythmic cascade of beauty in front of my eyes.
I had a feeling that the rhythms of the swirling leaves, the pattern of their flight, and the distribution of their color, held messages and meanings that I could not yet discern. It was as if there was a voice whispering in the breeze, one which spoke of things of importance and mystery. In that moment I understood that the entirety of our existence is speaking to us. I understood that the world was constantly sending us messages and it was our responsibility to notice and collaborate accordingly. It is only when I remember to acknowledge these moments and open my eyes to the world that surrounds me that I feel gratitude for the vision and sight that has afforded me moments of great and deep beauty, companionship, and remembrance for who and what we are all a part of.
What is this force or energy that moves through and surrounds all things and visits in dreams? Could it be the very essence of nature itself? This power or energy which can come in the form of wind, air, breath, spirit, soul, or life lies at the root of all transcendent experience and is a basic part of human life everywhere. This is the same phenomenon that makes it possible for us as humans, to see, experience and recognize the holy. We often set these moments aside as “other”, while recognizing, if only for that fleeting moment that we are part of something far bigger than ourselves. There is a possibility for the recognition and awareness to lead us to the understanding that somehow nature is also dependent on us for its continued holiness. Is it possible that we can see ourselves also as nature? No longer separate, but intricately linked and in this relationship we are also holy and sacred beings.
