Firebird
36" x 24" / acrylic on canvas / sold
From the center of the spiral the Firebird was born. On a rare night when I had the house to myself, I indulged in the luxury of fifteen solid hours of painting. When I started I had no idea what was about to emerge. I layered black paint over the canvas and let the colors flow as they would. Just as in the Stories of old, the great bird rose in an explosion of flames and with a great exertion of energy. I awoke on the couch at three in the morning with the palette on the floor and the painting complete. I do not remember stopping painting, nor do I remember setting the palette down or laying my body down on the couch to rest. A symbol of transformation, resurrection and change. Out of the ashes a new beginning. Out of the fire a new power is born. Out of darkness a new day is dawning.
